Principal Highway Engineer - MTO
We are seeking a Principal Highway Engineer to provide technical leadership on complex transportation infrastructure projects, from preliminary planning and design through construction, commissioning, and ongoing asset management. The successful candidate will lead multidisciplinary teams delivering highway, freeway, interchange, intersection, drainage, and related transportation improvements. This role will involve establishing engineering strategies, reviewing technical deliverables, resolving design and construction issues, and ensuring that solutions meet applicable standards, legislation, safety requirements, and performance objectives.
Responsibilities include managing or overseeing the preparation and review of engineering studies, design reports, drawings, specifications, cost estimates, tender documentation, construction staging plans, and contract administration materials. You will provide expert advice on geometric design, pavement, traffic operations, structures coordination, utilities, environmental constraints, risk management, and constructability. The role also requires reviewing consultant and contractor submissions, monitoring schedules and budgets, supporting procurement and contract negotiations, participating in site inspections and technical meetings, and communicating recommendations to senior decision-makers, stakeholders, municipalities, and the public. You will mentor engineers and technical staff while promoting consistent engineering practices, quality assurance, innovation, and a strong culture of health and safety.
Applicants should hold a degree in civil engineering, preferably with a focus on transportation or highway engineering, and be licensed as a Professional Engineer in the relevant jurisdiction or eligible for registration. Significant experience in the planning, design, delivery, and construction of major highway or transportation projects is required, along with strong knowledge of applicable design manuals, standards, specifications, procurement models, and regulatory requirements. Experience leading multidisciplinary teams, managing consultants, reviewing complex technical work, and providing clear written and verbal advice will be highly valued. The successful candidate will demonstrate sound professional judgment, strategic thinking, strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, and the interpersonal skills needed to build effective relationships across technical and non-technical groups.
