Director, Fleet Electrical Engineering
Director, Fleet Electrical Engineering
We are seeking an accomplished engineering leader to direct the electrical engineering strategy for a modern and evolving fleet. This is a senior role with responsibility for ensuring the safety, reliability, performance and technical compliance of fleet electrical systems throughout their lifecycle.
You will provide clear technical leadership across electrical design, systems integration, maintenance engineering, asset performance and fleet improvement programmes. Working closely with operational, safety, procurement and project teams, you will translate business requirements into robust engineering solutions and support the introduction of new technologies across the fleet.
Key responsibilities
- Set and deliver the strategic direction for fleet electrical engineering, aligned with operational and asset-management objectives.
- Lead, develop and motivate a team of engineers and technical specialists, promoting high standards of collaboration and professional practice.
- Own engineering standards, specifications, assurance processes and technical governance for electrical systems and equipment.
- Oversee the investigation of technical failures, recurring defects and safety-related issues, ensuring effective corrective and preventive action.
- Provide engineering authority for fleet modifications, refurbishment, new-build projects and the introduction of emerging technologies.
- Manage technical risk, compliance, configuration control and lifecycle cost considerations across the fleet.
- Build effective relationships with suppliers, contractors, regulators and internal stakeholders.
- Champion continuous improvement, data-led asset performance and the adoption of sustainable engineering practices.
About you
You will be a professionally qualified electrical engineer with substantial experience in fleet, rolling stock, transport, industrial or similarly complex engineering environments. You will bring a strong understanding of electrical power, control systems, traction, high-voltage equipment, testing and maintenance principles, together with experience of engineering assurance and safety-critical operations.
A strategic thinker and confident decision-maker, you will be able to communicate complex technical matters clearly at all levels. Experience of leading multidisciplinary teams, managing significant engineering programmes and working within regulated environments is essential. A relevant degree and professional registration, or demonstrable equivalent experience, are expected.
What is offered
This role offers the opportunity to shape the future of a technically advanced fleet, influence long-term investment and lead meaningful improvements in safety, reliability and sustainability. A competitive benefits package and strong opportunities for professional development are available.
