Water Utilities District Engineer
We are seeking a Water Utilities District Engineer to support the safe, reliable and efficient delivery of water and wastewater services across a designated operational area. The role will involve overseeing the planning, design, construction, maintenance and renewal of utility assets, including water mains, pumping stations, treatment facilities, reservoirs, storage infrastructure and associated networks. You will provide sound engineering advice, contribute to capital investment programmes and help ensure that all works meet relevant technical, environmental, health and safety standards.
Key responsibilities will include assessing asset performance and operational risks; developing and reviewing project scopes, designs, cost estimates and technical specifications; coordinating contractors, consultants and internal teams; and monitoring progress, quality, budgets and delivery milestones. You will investigate service interruptions, leakage, capacity constraints and infrastructure failures, recommending practical and sustainable solutions. The postholder will also contribute to asset management plans, emergency response activities, regulatory reporting, procurement exercises and the continuous improvement of engineering procedures. Clear communication with operational colleagues, customers, regulators, landowners and other stakeholders will be an important part of the role.
Applicants should hold a degree or equivalent qualification in civil, environmental, water or a related engineering discipline, with relevant professional experience in water utilities, municipal infrastructure or a comparable regulated environment. Knowledge of hydraulic modelling, pipeline design, pumping systems, wastewater processes, construction standards and asset management principles is desirable. Experience managing projects and contractors, interpreting technical data and applying health, safety and environmental legislation will be highly valued. Professional registration or progress towards registration is advantageous. You should be organised, analytical and capable of making well-founded decisions in time-sensitive situations, while working effectively both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team. A full driving licence and willingness to travel within the service area may be required.
