Senior Instrumentation and Controls (I&C) Engineer - Water Practice

We are seeking a Senior Instrumentation and Controls (I&C) Engineer to support the delivery of innovative water and wastewater infrastructure projects. This role will provide technical leadership across the full project lifecycle, from feasibility and concept design through detailed design, construction support, commissioning and operational handover. You will work closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams, clients, contractors and suppliers to develop safe, reliable and cost-effective control solutions for treatment plants, pumping stations, reservoirs and associated water infrastructure.

Your responsibilities will include preparing and reviewing control philosophies, instrumentation specifications, I&C drawings, schedules, data sheets, calculations and technical reports. You will define control system architectures, develop functional design specifications, review PLC and SCADA strategies, and support the selection and integration of instrumentation, telemetry and industrial communications systems. You will also contribute to process risk assessments, HAZOP and design reviews, ensure compliance with relevant standards, and provide technical guidance to engineers and designers. During construction and commissioning, you may inspect installations, review supplier documentation, resolve technical queries, witness testing and support system performance verification.

The successful candidate will have a degree or equivalent qualification in control systems, electrical engineering, instrumentation engineering or a related discipline, together with substantial experience delivering I&C designs within the water, wastewater or wider infrastructure sector. Strong knowledge of PLC, SCADA, telemetry, control panel design, instrumentation and industrial networks is required, along with experience producing engineering documentation and managing technical interfaces. Professional registration or progress toward professional registration is desirable. You should be confident communicating with technical and non-technical stakeholders, capable of mentoring less experienced colleagues, and committed to quality, safety and sustainable design. Familiarity with UK water industry standards, CDM requirements and common design software would be advantageous.
