Aquatic Biologist
We are seeking an Aquatic Biologist to support the assessment, monitoring and management of freshwater and aquatic ecosystems. This role will contribute to field programs, environmental investigations and technical studies involving rivers, streams, lakes, wetlands and associated habitats. You will work with a multidisciplinary team to collect reliable data, evaluate ecological conditions and provide practical advice to support environmental protection, restoration and sustainable development.
Key responsibilities include planning and undertaking aquatic habitat assessments, fish and invertebrate surveys, water quality monitoring and biological sampling. You will identify aquatic species and habitats, document field observations, maintain accurate records and ensure samples are collected, handled and stored in accordance with approved procedures. The role will also involve analysing and interpreting ecological data, preparing technical reports, mapping survey results, contributing to impact assessments and developing recommendations for mitigation, monitoring and habitat enhancement. You may also assist with regulatory submissions, project planning, procurement, contractor coordination and the preparation of clear presentations for technical and non-technical audiences. Regular travel to field locations and work in variable weather and terrain will be required.
Applicants should hold a degree in aquatic biology, fisheries, ecology, environmental science or a related discipline, together with relevant professional experience in aquatic assessment or environmental consulting. Knowledge of freshwater ecology, fish biology, aquatic invertebrate identification, water quality parameters and applicable environmental legislation is highly desirable. Experience using field equipment, geographic information systems and data analysis tools will be advantageous. You will need strong written and verbal communication skills, sound scientific judgement, attention to detail and the ability to manage competing priorities. A current driver’s licence, willingness to travel and the ability to work safely in and around water are essential.
