Tunnel Engineer
We are seeking an experienced Tunnel Engineer to support the delivery of complex underground infrastructure projects. This role will involve providing technical expertise throughout the design, construction and commissioning stages, ensuring that tunnel works are safe, compliant, efficient and delivered to the required standards.
You will work closely with design teams, site management, contractors and other engineering disciplines to develop practical solutions to construction challenges. The successful candidate will contribute to planning, technical reviews, risk management and the continuous improvement of tunnelling methods and processes.
Key responsibilities
- Develop, review and oversee tunnel design packages, construction methodologies and temporary works proposals.
- Provide engineering support for excavation, tunnel lining, ground support, waterproofing and associated underground works.
- Monitor construction activities to ensure compliance with approved drawings, specifications, inspection and test plans, and relevant legislation.
- Review technical submissions, design calculations, risk assessments and method statements.
- Support site investigations, surveys, progress monitoring and the resolution of technical queries.
- Identify potential risks and implement effective mitigation measures in collaboration with project teams.
- Prepare technical reports, progress updates and engineering records.
- Promote high standards of health, safety, environmental management and quality across all activities.
Skills and experience
You will hold a degree or equivalent qualification in civil engineering, structural engineering, mining engineering or a related discipline. Demonstrable experience in tunnelling, underground construction or major infrastructure projects is essential. Experience with tunnel boring machines, sprayed concrete lining, drill and blast techniques or sequential excavation methods would be advantageous.
Applicants should have a sound understanding of relevant British Standards, Eurocodes, construction regulations and tunnel engineering principles. Strong technical, analytical and problem-solving skills are required, together with the ability to communicate clearly with both technical and non-technical colleagues.
What you will bring
Professional registration, or active progress towards chartered status, is desirable. You will be organised, commercially aware and confident working in a demanding project environment. A proactive approach, attention to detail and commitment to safe and sustainable delivery are essential. The role may require travel between project locations and occasional work outside standard hours.
