This role will involve providing technical leadership across the design, construction and assessment of tunnels, shafts, underground stations and associated structures.
You will work closely with multidisciplinary teams, contractors, clients and technical specialists to develop safe, practical and cost-effective engineering solutions. The successful candidate will bring strong technical knowledge, sound commercial awareness and the ability to lead projects from concept through to completion.
Key responsibilities
- Lead the design and technical delivery of tunnel and underground infrastructure projects.
- Prepare and review calculations, specifications, drawings, reports and technical documentation.
- Provide guidance on tunnelling methods, temporary works, ground conditions and construction risk.
- Coordinate multidisciplinary design activities and manage interfaces between civil, structural, geotechnical and construction teams.
- Support project planning, cost control, risk management and programme delivery.
- Review contractor proposals, method statements, inspection records and technical submissions.
- Attend site visits, design reviews and progress meetings, providing clear technical advice.
- Mentor junior engineers and contribute to the development of technical standards and best practice.
- Promote high standards of health, safety, quality and environmental performance throughout project delivery.
About you
You will hold a degree in civil engineering, structural engineering, geotechnical engineering or a related discipline, together with substantial experience in tunnel engineering and underground construction. Professional registration, or active progress towards chartership, is highly desirable.
Experience of working with major infrastructure, rail, highways, utilities or metro projects would be advantageous. You should have a strong understanding of relevant British Standards, Eurocodes, health and safety requirements, and contemporary tunnelling techniques. Familiarity with design software, technical assurance processes and construction contracts would also be beneficial.
Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills are essential, as is the ability to make sound decisions in a challenging project environment. In return, you will have the opportunity to work on technically demanding projects, develop your career and make a lasting contribution to the delivery of critical infrastructure.
