Environmental Engineer (Biosolids & Wastewater Treatment)
We are seeking an Environmental Engineer specialising in biosolids and wastewater treatment to support the delivery, improvement and compliance of complex water and environmental management operations. This role will suit an engineer with practical treatment experience, strong analytical capability and a commitment to sustainable resource recovery. You will work with operational, technical and regulatory stakeholders to ensure treatment processes are safe, efficient, reliable and environmentally responsible.
Your responsibilities will include monitoring and optimising wastewater treatment and biosolids processing systems; investigating operational issues and identifying opportunities to improve plant performance, energy efficiency and resilience; and supporting the development and implementation of engineering solutions, improvement projects and asset management plans. You will analyse process and laboratory data, prepare technical reports, maintain accurate records and contribute to environmental assessments, risk reviews and incident investigations. The role will also involve supporting regulatory compliance, permit requirements, sampling programmes and audit activities, as well as liaising with contractors, laboratories, regulators and internal teams. You may be required to contribute to project specifications, review designs, oversee commissioning activities and provide technical guidance to site-based colleagues.
You should hold a degree or equivalent qualification in environmental engineering, civil engineering, chemical engineering or a related discipline, together with relevant experience in wastewater treatment, sludge processing, biosolids management or a comparable regulated environment. Knowledge of treatment technologies, process control, environmental legislation, health and safety requirements and relevant industry standards is essential. Experience of data analysis, technical reporting, project delivery and continuous improvement would be highly advantageous. You will need excellent communication and organisational skills, sound professional judgement and the ability to manage competing priorities. A proactive approach, attention to detail and a genuine interest in reducing environmental impact are vital. The role may require occasional travel to operational sites and a willingness to work flexibly when responding to operational or environmental incidents.
