Project Manager (Drainage) - Transport Infrastructure
We are seeking an experienced Project Manager (Drainage) to lead the planning, design, delivery and maintenance of drainage works within major transport infrastructure projects. This role will oversee drainage packages from early feasibility and design development through procurement, construction, commissioning and handover, ensuring that works are delivered safely, efficiently, sustainably and in accordance with approved scope, budget and programme.
Key responsibilities will include managing multidisciplinary design teams, consultants, contractors and stakeholders; reviewing drainage strategies, hydraulic calculations, drawings, specifications and technical submissions; and ensuring compliance with relevant legislation, standards, environmental requirements and asset management principles. You will monitor programme progress, costs, risks, quality and change control, providing clear reports and recommendations to senior project leaders. The role will also involve coordinating interfaces with highways, structures, utilities, earthworks and environmental teams, resolving technical issues, supporting procurement and contract administration, and overseeing inspections, testing, commissioning and final documentation. You will promote safe systems of work and contribute to continuous improvement across project delivery.
Applicants should have substantial experience managing drainage or water-related infrastructure projects, preferably within highways, rail, airports or other complex transport environments. A relevant degree or professional qualification in civil engineering, water engineering or a related discipline is required, together with strong knowledge of surface water drainage, foul water systems, attenuation, culverts, channels, pumping arrangements, flood risk management and sustainable drainage solutions. Experience working with design standards, construction contracts, cost and programme controls, environmental approvals and stakeholder engagement is highly desirable. You will be an organised and confident communicator with strong commercial awareness, sound technical judgement and the ability to manage competing priorities. Professional membership of an appropriate engineering institution, or progress towards chartered status, would be advantageous.
