We are seeking an experienced Heavy Rail Lead to provide technical and operational leadership across complex rail infrastructure, maintenance, renewal, and improvement programmes. The successful candidate will coordinate multidisciplinary teams and ensure that all works are delivered safely, efficiently, and in accordance with approved standards, contracts, and programme requirements. This role will involve working closely with engineering, operations, project delivery, commercial, safety, and external delivery partners to achieve high-quality outcomes across the rail network.
Key responsibilities will include leading the planning and execution of heavy rail activities, reviewing technical proposals and work methods, and ensuring that construction, inspection, testing, commissioning, and handover requirements are properly managed. You will monitor progress, quality, resources, risks, and interfaces, taking timely action to resolve issues and maintain delivery milestones. The role will also involve providing expert advice on track and associated rail systems, supporting possession and access planning, reviewing design and assurance documentation, and ensuring that changes are appropriately assessed and controlled. You will promote a strong safety culture, investigate technical or operational issues, and ensure compliance with relevant legislation, standards, procedures, and environmental requirements.
Applicants should have substantial experience in heavy rail delivery, engineering, maintenance, or asset management, together with a strong understanding of rail safety, construction methodologies, access arrangements, and assurance processes. A relevant technical or engineering qualification, professional registration, or equivalent practical experience is desirable. You should be confident leading teams and suppliers, managing competing priorities, and communicating clearly with stakeholders at all levels. Strong problem-solving, decision-making, reporting, and organisational skills are essential, as is the ability to work collaboratively in a demanding operational environment. A proactive approach, attention to detail, and commitment to continuous improvement will be highly valued.
