Water Department Superintendent
We are seeking an experienced Water Department Superintendent to lead the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of water supply, treatment, storage, and distribution services. This role will oversee daily departmental activities, ensure regulatory compliance, maintain service standards, and support the long-term improvement of water infrastructure. The successful candidate will provide visible leadership to operational teams while promoting a strong culture of safety, accountability, customer service, and continuous improvement.
Key responsibilities include supervising, scheduling, and evaluating department staff; coordinating routine operations, maintenance, inspections, and emergency response activities; monitoring water quality, production, usage, and system performance; and ensuring accurate operational records and regulatory reports are maintained. You will develop and manage operating procedures, maintenance programmes, budgets, and procurement requirements, while identifying opportunities to improve efficiency and resilience. The role will also involve overseeing contractors and consultants, coordinating capital works, responding to service interruptions and customer concerns, and working closely with internal departments, regulators, contractors, and community representatives.
Applicants should have substantial experience in water utility operations, public works, or a closely related environment, together with demonstrated supervisory or managerial experience. A relevant qualification in water treatment, environmental science, civil engineering, public administration, or a similar discipline is desirable. Candidates should possess strong knowledge of drinking-water regulations, treatment processes, distribution systems, asset management, workplace health and safety, and emergency planning. A valid professional certification or operator licence may be required, depending on local regulations. Excellent communication, organisational, problem-solving, and decision-making skills are essential, along with the ability to manage competing priorities and work effectively during emergencies. A valid driving licence and willingness to participate in an on-call rota may also be required.
