Field Biologist
We are seeking a Field Biologist to support ecological surveys, environmental assessments, and biodiversity monitoring across a range of field locations. The role will involve planning and undertaking fieldwork, recording observations accurately, and contributing to reports that inform conservation, land management, and environmental compliance decisions. You will work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team, often in varied weather and terrain, with travel and occasional overnight stays required.
Key responsibilities include carrying out habitat, botanical, protected species, and general wildlife surveys; setting up and maintaining field equipment; collecting biological, environmental, and geographical data; and ensuring all records are complete, accurate, and submitted within agreed timescales. You will identify species and habitats where appropriate, take photographs and field notes, follow approved survey methodologies, and maintain a high standard of health, safety, and biosecurity. The role may also include supporting ecological impact assessments, assisting with mitigation and habitat management recommendations, preparing maps and technical summaries, and communicating findings to colleagues, clients, contractors, landowners, and relevant stakeholders.
Applicants should have a degree or equivalent qualification in biology, ecology, environmental science, or a related discipline, together with practical experience of biological fieldwork. Knowledge of UK habitats, protected species legislation, and standard ecological survey techniques is desirable. Experience with GPS units, databases, spreadsheets, and GIS software would be advantageous, as would relevant licences or demonstrable competence in specialist species surveys. You will need strong observational, organisational, and written communication skills, along with the ability to manage changing priorities and work carefully to deadlines. A full driving licence, physical fitness for demanding field conditions, and a flexible approach to travel are required. The successful candidate will demonstrate professionalism, initiative, attention to detail, and a genuine commitment to high-quality ecological practice.
