Field Biologist (Field Based)

We are seeking a Field Biologist to support ecological surveys, environmental monitoring and field-based research across a range of habitats. The role will involve planning and carrying out fieldwork, collecting biological and environmental data, and recording observations accurately in accordance with approved methods and relevant legislation. You will undertake surveys of flora, fauna and habitats, which may include protected or notable species, and contribute to the assessment of ecological conditions and potential impacts of development or land management activities.

Key responsibilities will include preparing survey equipment and documentation, identifying species in the field, taking photographs and samples where required, and maintaining clear, complete and auditable field records. You will enter and manage data, undertake quality checks, review findings and contribute to technical reports, maps and other project deliverables. The role may also involve assisting with ecological mitigation, monitoring programmes, habitat management recommendations and liaison with landowners, contractors, clients and regulatory stakeholders. You will be expected to work independently in remote and sometimes challenging environments, while collaborating effectively with colleagues and providing clear updates on progress, issues and emerging risks.

Applicants should have a degree or equivalent experience in biology, ecology, environmental science or a related discipline, together with practical experience of ecological fieldwork. Strong species identification skills and familiarity with relevant survey techniques, health and safety requirements, biosecurity procedures and environmental legislation are desirable. You should be organised, physically capable of working outdoors for extended periods in varied weather and terrain, and willing to travel regularly, including occasional overnight stays and work outside standard hours. A full driving licence, confidence using GPS, mapping or digital data-collection systems, and high standards of accuracy and professionalism are also required. Training and development opportunities may be available to support continued technical growth.
