Dirt superintendent
Dirt Superintendent
An experienced Dirt Superintendent is required to oversee earthworks and site preparation activities across civil engineering and construction projects. This is a hands-on leadership role, responsible for coordinating groundworks operations safely, efficiently and to the required quality standards.
You will supervise site teams, plant operators and subcontractors, ensuring that daily activities are properly planned and delivered in line with project programmes. Working closely with project management, engineers and other site supervisors, you will help maintain progress, resolve issues and ensure that work is completed in accordance with drawings, specifications and environmental requirements.
Key responsibilities
- Manage day-to-day earthworks, excavation, grading, compaction and backfilling operations.
- Coordinate labour, plant, materials and subcontractors to meet programme requirements.
- Read and interpret construction drawings, site plans, levels and specifications.
- Monitor productivity, quality and workmanship, taking corrective action where necessary.
- Ensure all activities comply with health and safety legislation, risk assessments and method statements.
- Carry out regular site inspections and communicate progress, constraints and requirements to the wider project team.
- Work with surveyors and engineers to confirm levels, setting out and earthwork quantities.
- Maintain accurate records, including daily reports, plant usage, materials and site activities.
- Support the identification and resolution of ground conditions, access and logistical challenges.
About you
You will have proven experience supervising earthworks or heavy civil engineering operations, with a strong understanding of modern construction methods, site safety and quality control. Experience operating in a supervisory or foreperson capacity is essential, along with the confidence to lead teams in demanding site environments.
Strong communication, organisation and problem-solving skills are required. You should be able to manage changing priorities, build effective working relationships and make sound decisions under pressure. A relevant site supervision qualification, such as an SMSTS or equivalent, would be advantageous, as would appropriate competence cards and experience working with GPS or machine-control systems.
This role offers the opportunity to contribute to significant construction projects while developing your career within a professional and supportive site team.
