Senior Dam Safety Engineer
Senior Dam Safety Engineer
An exciting opportunity is available for an experienced Senior Dam Safety Engineer to provide technical leadership across the assessment, management and improvement of dam safety standards. This role will suit a technically strong professional with a sound understanding of dams, reservoirs, hydraulic structures and regulatory requirements.
You will lead and contribute to dam safety projects throughout their lifecycle, from surveillance and inspection through to risk assessment, refurbishment and emergency planning. Working with multidisciplinary teams, you will provide pragmatic engineering advice, support asset owners and stakeholders, and ensure that safety risks are identified, assessed and managed effectively.
Key responsibilities
- Lead inspections, condition assessments and performance reviews for dams and associated infrastructure.
- Undertake or oversee risk assessments, failure mode analysis and the development of risk reduction measures.
- Review technical studies, designs, calculations, reports and construction proposals produced by internal and external teams.
- Provide advice on dam surveillance, monitoring systems, instrumentation and data interpretation.
- Support emergency preparedness, emergency action plans and incident response activities.
- Manage project scopes, budgets, programmes and technical deliverables while maintaining high professional standards.
- Build effective relationships with clients, regulators, contractors and other stakeholders.
- Mentor engineers and contribute to the development of technical guidance, procedures and best practice.
About you
You will hold a degree in civil, geotechnical, structural or water engineering, together with substantial experience in dam safety or a closely related field. Professional registration, such as Chartered Engineer status or progress towards it, is desirable.
Strong knowledge of dam engineering principles, hydrology, hydraulics, geotechnical behaviour, structural performance and relevant UK legislation is essential. Experience with risk-informed decision-making, numerical analysis, technical software and asset management systems would be advantageous.
You will be a confident communicator, capable of explaining complex technical issues clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences. A methodical approach, sound judgement, commercial awareness and a commitment to health, safety and quality are essential. The role may involve travel to operational sites and inspections, including occasional overnight stays.
