An exciting opportunity is available for an experienced Earthworks Superintendent to lead the safe, efficient and high-quality delivery of earthworks activities on a major construction project. This role will suit a practical and organised professional with strong site leadership skills and a thorough understanding of bulk excavation, drainage, remediation, grading and ground preparation.

Working closely with project management, engineering and subcontractor teams, you will coordinate daily operations, monitor progress and ensure works are completed in line with approved designs, programmes and quality requirements. You will be responsible for maintaining a productive site environment while promoting a strong culture of safety, environmental awareness and continuous improvement.

Key responsibilities

  • Supervise earthworks crews, plant operators, subcontractors and site support personnel.
  • Plan and coordinate daily activities, resources, plant and materials to meet programme targets.
  • Interpret construction drawings, specifications, survey information and method statements.
  • Monitor excavation, filling, compaction, grading and testing activities to ensure compliance.
  • Work with engineers and surveyors to resolve technical issues and manage changes on site.
  • Complete regular inspections, maintain accurate records and support progress reporting.
  • Identify hazards, implement control measures and ensure all works follow relevant health and safety requirements.
  • Manage environmental controls, including dust, noise, sediment, water and spoil handling.
  • Coordinate interfaces with other trades and ensure work areas are properly prepared and handed over.

About you

You will have proven experience supervising earthworks on civil engineering, infrastructure, utilities or large-scale construction projects. A strong understanding of earthmoving plant, ground conditions, compaction standards and setting-out processes is essential. You should be confident directing teams, managing competing priorities and making sound decisions in a fast-paced site environment.

Excellent communication and organisational skills are required, together with a proactive approach to problem-solving and a commitment to delivering work safely and right first time. Relevant industry qualifications, site safety training and a recognised plant or construction supervision certification would be advantageous.

This is an excellent opportunity to join a professional project team, take ownership of significant site activities and contribute to the successful delivery of a high-profile programme.
