Sr Director, HSSE Project Execution

We are seeking an experienced senior leader to drive Health, Safety, Security and Environment (HSSE) performance across a portfolio of major projects. This role will provide strategic direction, operational oversight and visible leadership throughout the project lifecycle, ensuring that HSSE is embedded into planning, design, procurement, construction, commissioning and handover.

Reporting to a senior executive, you will establish consistent standards, governance and assurance processes across complex, high-value programmes. You will partner with project directors, engineering teams, contractors and operational stakeholders to identify risk, strengthen controls and deliver measurable improvements in HSSE performance.

Key responsibilities

  • Set and implement the HSSE project execution strategy, standards, procedures and performance objectives.
  • Lead and develop a high-performing team of HSSE professionals across multiple projects and locations.
  • Provide expert advice on risk management, regulatory compliance, construction safety, environmental performance and emergency preparedness.
  • Review project plans, design decisions, work methods and contractor arrangements to ensure HSSE risks are identified and effectively controlled.
  • Establish assurance programmes, audits, inspections and performance reviews, ensuring findings are closed out promptly.
  • Promote a proactive, learning-focused safety culture, including leadership engagement, workforce participation and the sharing of lessons learned.
  • Monitor leading and lagging indicators, investigate significant incidents and present clear performance reports to executive stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with regulators, joint venture partners, suppliers and contractors to maintain high standards throughout project delivery.

About you

You will be a confident and credible HSSE leader with substantial experience supporting large-scale capital projects, ideally within energy, infrastructure, engineering, manufacturing or another highly regulated environment. You should have a strong understanding of international HSSE legislation, recognised management systems and contractor governance.

A relevant degree or professional qualification is desirable, alongside significant leadership experience in project execution. Excellent communication, influencing and decision-making skills are essential, as is the ability to challenge constructively and operate effectively in a complex, multicultural environment. The role may require regular travel to project and construction sites.
