Superintendent Underground Wet Utilities Open Cut, Pipe Bursting
Superintendent – Underground Wet Utilities, Open Cut & Pipe Bursting
An experienced Superintendent is required to lead the safe and efficient delivery of underground wet utility projects, including open-cut excavation and pipe-bursting works. This is a site-based role for a practical, organised construction professional who can coordinate multiple work fronts, maintain strong production standards and ensure projects are delivered to programme.
You will oversee daily site operations, supervising forepersons, operators, labourers, subcontractors and specialist crews. Working closely with project management, engineers, inspectors and utility stakeholders, you will ensure work is planned effectively, completed in accordance with approved designs and delivered to the required quality, safety and environmental standards.
Key responsibilities
- Plan and manage open-cut and trenchless utility installation activities, including pipe bursting, service connections, manholes and reinstatement.
- Coordinate labour, plant, materials, traffic management and subcontractor activities across active work areas.
- Interpret drawings, specifications, permits and method statements, identifying constructability issues before work begins.
- Monitor productivity, progress and workmanship, taking corrective action where required to maintain programme dates.
- Lead daily briefings, toolbox talks and site coordination meetings, promoting a strong safety culture.
- Ensure excavation, shoring, confined-space, lifting and utility-protection requirements are properly managed.
- Maintain accurate records, including daily reports, quantities, inspections, deliveries, changes and site instructions.
- Work with quality and environmental teams to ensure testing, compliance, waste management and reinstatement obligations are met.
- Support the resolution of technical, logistical and stakeholder issues in a timely and professional manner.
About you
You will have substantial experience supervising underground utilities or civil infrastructure projects, with practical knowledge of wet utilities, excavation and pipe-bursting methods. You should be confident reading technical documentation, directing site teams and working in live or congested environments. Strong communication, decision-making and problem-solving skills are essential, as is a consistent commitment to safe working practices.
Relevant construction supervision qualifications, utility experience and recognised health and safety training are desirable. A valid driving licence and flexibility to work across project locations may also be required.
