We are seeking an experienced Earthwork Superintendent to lead the safe, efficient and high-quality delivery of earthworks on a major construction project. This is a site-based role for a practical and organised leader who can coordinate teams, manage resources and maintain progress against demanding programmes.

You will oversee daily earthwork operations, including excavation, grading, drainage preparation, embankment construction, material placement and compaction. Working closely with project management, engineers, subcontractors and site crews, you will ensure activities are completed in accordance with approved drawings, specifications, method statements and relevant legislation.

Key responsibilities

  • Supervise earthworks crews, plant operators and subcontractors across active work areas.
  • Plan daily activities, allocate labour and equipment, and monitor productivity.
  • Interpret construction drawings, surveys and specifications to support accurate setting out and execution.
  • Coordinate deliveries, excavation sequences, spoil management and the movement of materials around site.
  • Monitor levels, grades, compaction and quality control requirements, working with engineering and testing teams.
  • Identify site risks, implement appropriate controls and promote a strong safety culture.
  • Maintain accurate records, including daily reports, progress updates, plant usage and resource requirements.
  • Resolve operational issues promptly and escalate technical, programme or safety concerns when necessary.

About you

You will have substantial experience supervising earthworks within civil engineering, infrastructure, highways, utilities or large-scale construction environments. A strong understanding of ground conditions, earthmoving plant, temporary works and construction sequencing is essential. Experience working to tight programme and quality targets will be highly valued.

You should be confident leading teams, communicating with people at all levels and making sound decisions in a fast-paced site environment. A relevant construction qualification, site safety certification and appropriate supervisory training are desirable. A valid driving licence and the flexibility to work across active project locations may also be required.
