Senior Paleontologist
We are seeking an experienced Senior Paleontologist to lead paleontological investigations and provide expert guidance across a range of environmental, infrastructure, research, and heritage projects. The successful candidate will be responsible for designing and managing field programs, assessing potential impacts on fossil resources, and ensuring that all work is conducted in accordance with relevant legislation, permitting conditions, and professional standards. This role offers the opportunity to contribute to technically challenging projects while supporting the conservation and interpretation of significant paleontological resources.
Key responsibilities include planning and supervising field surveys, fossil monitoring, excavation, collection, and documentation activities; identifying, recording, and evaluating fossil specimens and geological contexts; preparing paleontological impact assessments, monitoring reports, technical studies, management plans, and permit applications; and coordinating laboratory processing, curation, cataloguing, and archival requirements. You will provide technical leadership to project teams, mentor junior staff and field personnel, liaise with regulators, clients, landowners, museums, laboratories, and Indigenous or local communities, and contribute to proposals, budgets, schedules, and quality assurance processes. The role may also involve public education, scientific publications, presentations, and expert testimony where required.
Applicants should hold a postgraduate qualification in paleontology, geology, earth sciences, or a closely related discipline, together with substantial professional experience in applied paleontology or geological consulting. Demonstrated expertise in vertebrate, invertebrate, or plant fossils; stratigraphy, sedimentology, and taphonomy; paleontological field methods; and relevant regulatory frameworks is essential. Experience leading multidisciplinary projects, managing budgets and deliverables, and producing clear technical documentation is highly desirable. Strong analytical, written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills are required, along with sound judgement, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently in remote or demanding field conditions. A valid driving licence, willingness to travel, and any necessary professional or fieldwork certifications may be required.
