Superintendent - Water/Wastewater Plants
We are seeking an experienced Superintendent – Water/Wastewater Plants to oversee the safe, efficient and compliant operation of municipal water and wastewater treatment facilities. This role will provide leadership to plant operators, maintenance personnel and contractors while ensuring reliable service delivery, regulatory compliance and strong operational performance. The successful candidate will bring sound technical knowledge, practical problem-solving skills and a commitment to public health, environmental protection and workplace safety.
Key responsibilities will include supervising day-to-day treatment plant operations, monitoring process performance and ensuring all activities comply with applicable legislation, permits, operating standards and health and safety requirements. You will develop and maintain operating procedures, review operational data, identify process improvements and coordinate responses to equipment failures, process upsets and emergency situations. The role will also oversee preventive maintenance planning, chemical and materials management, laboratory and sampling activities, inspections, reporting and record keeping. You will contribute to capital works, upgrades and commissioning activities, working closely with engineering teams, contractors, suppliers and regulatory representatives.
The Superintendent will recruit, coach and evaluate team members, establish work priorities and promote a positive culture focused on accountability, collaboration and continuous improvement. Applicants should have substantial experience in water and/or wastewater treatment plant operations, including supervisory or management experience in a unionized or multi-disciplinary environment. A relevant diploma, degree or recognized technical qualification in water treatment, wastewater operations, environmental science, engineering or a related field is preferred, along with the appropriate operator certification for the jurisdiction. Strong knowledge of treatment processes, occupational health and safety, environmental regulations, maintenance coordination and operational budgeting is required. Excellent communication, organizational and decision-making skills, together with the ability to participate in an on-call or emergency response rotation, will be important for success.
