General Superintendent - Healthcare Construction
General Superintendent – Healthcare Construction
An experienced General Superintendent is required to lead the delivery of complex healthcare construction projects from mobilisation through to completion. This is a site-based leadership role, responsible for coordinating construction activities, maintaining high standards of safety and quality, and ensuring projects are delivered on programme and within budget.
You will provide clear direction to site teams, trade contractors and specialist suppliers, working closely with project management, design consultants, healthcare stakeholders and commissioning teams. The successful candidate will understand the demands of working in live or highly regulated healthcare environments, where infection control, patient safety and operational continuity are critical.
Key responsibilities
- Manage day-to-day site operations across major healthcare construction projects.
- Plan and coordinate construction sequences, logistics, temporary works and site resources.
- Lead, mentor and motivate site management, supervisors, trades and subcontractors.
- Monitor progress against programme, identifying risks, delays and required corrective actions.
- Ensure works comply with approved drawings, specifications, building regulations and quality standards.
- Maintain rigorous health, safety, environmental and infection prevention controls.
- Coordinate inspections, testing, commissioning, handover and close-out activities.
- Attend progress meetings and provide accurate updates to senior project leadership.
- Build effective working relationships with clients, clinical representatives, consultants and supply-chain partners.
About you
You will have substantial experience as a Superintendent, Senior Site Manager or Construction Manager, ideally delivering acute healthcare, clinical, laboratory or other technically complex projects. A strong understanding of construction methods, sequencing, building services coordination and quality assurance is essential.
You should be a confident and decisive leader with excellent communication, planning and problem-solving skills. The ability to manage competing priorities, resolve issues promptly and maintain a collaborative site culture is vital. Experience working in occupied facilities or environments requiring stringent access, phasing and infection-control arrangements would be highly advantageous.
Relevant construction qualifications, including SMSTS, First Aid and appropriate site management certification, are expected. A formal qualification in construction management or a related discipline is desirable. This role may involve working extended hours or occasional weekends to support key project milestones.
