Senior Project Manager, Practice Builder - Surface Water

We are seeking a Senior Project Manager, Practice Builder – Surface Water to lead and grow a specialist surface water engineering service. This is a senior technical and client-facing role for an experienced professional who can combine project leadership, business development and team growth. You will manage complex water, drainage and flood risk projects from early feasibility through design, approvals, construction support and completion, delivering high-quality outcomes to agreed programmes, budgets and standards.

Your responsibilities will include developing and maintaining strong relationships with clients, regulators, contractors and project partners; identifying new opportunities; preparing proposals and fee submissions; and supporting the continued expansion of the surface water practice. You will provide technical direction across flood risk assessments, drainage strategies, sustainable drainage systems, hydraulic modelling, water quality, catchment management and climate resilience. You will also oversee multidisciplinary project teams, allocate resources, monitor financial performance, manage risk and ensure that work is delivered safely, efficiently and in accordance with relevant legislation, guidance and professional standards. The role will involve mentoring colleagues, contributing to recruitment and capability development, and representing the practice at industry events and client meetings.

You will be a professionally qualified civil or water resources engineer with substantial experience in surface water, flood risk or drainage consultancy, together with a strong record of managing projects and winning work. Experience with hydraulic modelling and design software, sustainable drainage principles, planning and environmental approvals, and relevant UK standards and guidance is expected. Commercial awareness, excellent written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to influence stakeholders at all levels are essential. We are looking for someone who is collaborative, commercially minded and motivated to build a high-performing service, while maintaining technical excellence and a strong focus on client value. A relevant degree and chartered or equivalent professional status would be advantageous.
