Automation Commissioning Engineer - Hydropower

Location: Heidenheim an der Brenz / Ravensburg, Germany (Global epicenters of hydro-mechanical design and plant automation)

The Role

Are you ready to bring state-of-the-art clean energy projects to life in the field? We are partnering with a world-leading hydropower technology and engineering group seeking an Automation Commissioning Engineer to lead the on-site testing, validation, and deployment of complex control systems and automation architectures for major hydroelectric and pumped-storage plants across Europe and international markets.

In this role, you will be the critical bridge between engineering design and physical plant operation, ensuring that PLC, SCADA, and turbine-governing systems perform flawlessly under real-world operating conditions.

Key Responsibilities

  • On-Site Commissioning & Testing: Lead Site Acceptance Testing (SAT), loop checks, cold/hot commissioning, and final handovers of automation and SCADA systems directly at hydroelectric power plants.
  • Factory Acceptance & Validation: Participate in Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) alongside software and design engineering teams to pre-validate PLC logic (IEC 61131-3) and HMI interfaces before site deployment.
  • Troubleshooting & Optimization: Diagnose and resolve complex hardware, network, and software issues during startup, tuning turbine governors, excitation systems, and balance-of-plant automation.
  • Client & Stakeholder Management: Coordinate closely with site managers, electrical/mechanical contractors, and utility clients to ensure commissioning milestones are met safely and on schedule.

What We Are Looking For

  • Experience: 3-6+ years of hands-on experience in industrial automation, field instrumentation, or electrical commissioning, with a strong preference for power generation, utilities, or heavy rotating equipment.
  • Technical Mastery: Practical, field-tested expertise with major industrial control systems (e.g., Siemens SIMATIC S7/PCS7, ABB, or Schneider Electric) and industrial networking protocols.
  • Travel Flexibility: Willingness and readiness for national and international travel to remote hydropower plant sites for extended commissioning campaigns (up to 50-60% field presence).
  • Qualifications: Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Automation, Mechatronics, or equivalent practical technical training, with fluent professional English (German language skills are a strong asset).

Why Apply?

  • Tangible Impact: See your work come alive in the field, turning raw engineering designs into functioning, reliable baseload renewable energy assets.
  • Global Exposure: Travel internationally while building a specialized career at the absolute pinnacle of hydro-energy technology.
  • Rewards: Competitive industrial remuneration package including lucrative field allowances, comprehensive corporate benefits, and structured relocation assistance.
