Lead Estimator
Lead Estimator
An experienced Lead Estimator is required to manage the preparation of accurate, competitive and commercially sound estimates for a varied portfolio of projects. This is an important role for a technically minded professional who can interpret complex requirements, assess risk and provide clear cost advice from initial enquiry through to contract award.
You will lead estimating activities, co-ordinate input from internal teams and external suppliers, and ensure that all submissions are completed to a consistently high standard and within agreed timescales. The role will involve working closely with commercial, procurement, design and project delivery colleagues to develop robust pricing strategies and support successful project outcomes.
Key responsibilities
- Review tender documents, specifications, drawings and scope requirements to identify project needs and potential risks.
- Prepare detailed estimates, bills of quantities, cost plans and tender submissions.
- Obtain and evaluate quotations from suppliers and subcontractors, ensuring assumptions and exclusions are clearly documented.
- Lead estimating reviews, challenge costs where appropriate and provide recommendations to senior stakeholders.
- Maintain accurate estimating records, cost databases and benchmarking information.
- Support value engineering, risk assessment and commercial negotiations throughout the tender process.
- Ensure estimates comply with relevant standards, contractual requirements and internal procedures.
- Assist with handover to project teams, clearly communicating pricing assumptions, risks and opportunities.
About you
You will have substantial experience in an estimating role, ideally within construction, engineering, infrastructure, manufacturing or another project-led environment. You should be confident working with technical documentation, cost analysis and estimating software, with strong numerical and analytical skills.
Excellent communication and negotiation abilities are essential, as is the confidence to influence decisions and build effective relationships with stakeholders at all levels. You will be organised, commercially aware and able to manage competing priorities while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail.
A relevant qualification or equivalent practical experience is desirable. The successful candidate will demonstrate sound judgement, a proactive approach and a commitment to delivering high-quality estimates that support safe, efficient and profitable project delivery.
