We are seeking a Civil Substation Lead Engineer to take technical ownership of civil and structural engineering activities across substation projects, from initial development and design through construction, commissioning, and handover. The role will involve coordinating multidisciplinary teams and ensuring that civil engineering solutions are safe, practical, compliant, and suitable for construction and long-term operation. You will contribute to project planning, design reviews, technical assessments, cost and programme management, and the resolution of complex engineering issues.

Key responsibilities will include leading the development and review of civil designs for substations, including site layouts, earthworks, drainage, roads, foundations, cable trenches, equipment bases, control buildings, retaining structures, fencing, and access arrangements. You will prepare and approve technical specifications, calculations, drawings, schedules, and tender documentation, while coordinating inputs from geotechnical, structural, electrical, environmental, and construction teams. The successful candidate will also support site investigations, liaise with clients, contractors, suppliers, and statutory authorities, and provide technical guidance during construction. Ensuring compliance with relevant legislation, industry standards, health and safety requirements, quality procedures, and environmental commitments will be a central part of the position.

Applicants should hold a degree or equivalent qualification in civil or structural engineering and have substantial experience delivering civil engineering packages for substations, transmission, distribution, utilities, or other complex energy infrastructure projects. Professional registration or chartered status is desirable. You will need strong knowledge of civil design principles, construction methods, temporary works interfaces, geotechnical considerations, and applicable design codes and standards. Experience with design management, contractor coordination, technical assurance, and multidisciplinary delivery is essential. Excellent communication, organisation, problem-solving, and leadership skills are required, together with the ability to manage competing priorities and make sound engineering decisions. A commitment to safety, quality, sustainability, and continuous improvement is expected. Occasional travel to project and construction sites may be required.
