You will work closely with engineering, operations, maintenance, safety and supply chain teams to ensure rolling stock meets required standards, performance targets and passenger expectations.

Key responsibilities will include developing and maintaining rolling stock strategies, asset management plans and technical standards; leading investigations into reliability, defects, incidents and recurring failures; and identifying opportunities to improve fleet availability, maintainability and whole-life cost. You will monitor key performance indicators, review maintenance regimes, manage technical risks and provide clear reports and recommendations to senior stakeholders. The role will also involve overseeing contractors and suppliers, ensuring work is delivered to agreed quality, safety, budget and programme requirements. You will support engineering change, acceptance and assurance activities, while ensuring compliance with applicable railway legislation, standards and safety management systems.

The successful candidate will have substantial experience in rolling stock engineering, fleet management or a related railway discipline, together with a strong understanding of maintenance principles, asset performance and technical assurance. A relevant engineering qualification or equivalent professional experience is required, and professional registration would be advantageous. You should be confident interpreting technical information, managing competing priorities and making evidence-based decisions in a safety-critical environment. Strong communication, stakeholder management and leadership skills are essential, as is the ability to influence teams and suppliers without direct authority. Experience of rail vehicles, fleet introduction, refurbishment, reliability improvement or maintenance optimisation would be highly valued.

We are seeking an experienced Rolling Stock Lead Engineer to provide technical leadership across the design, development, modification, testing and introduction of railway vehicles and associated systems. This is a key role for an engineer who can balance technical excellence, safety, reliability, cost and programme requirements while working across multidisciplinary project teams. You will lead engineering activities from concept through to delivery, ensuring that rolling stock solutions comply with applicable standards, specifications, legislation and customer requirements.

Your responsibilities will include defining and managing technical requirements, reviewing designs, coordinating engineering work packages and providing authoritative technical advice to project managers, suppliers, operators and other stakeholders. You will oversee verification and validation activities, engineering change control, risk assessments, configuration management and the preparation of technical documentation. You will also support manufacturing, commissioning, testing and in-service investigations, identifying root causes and implementing effective corrective actions. Where required, you will contribute to bids, feasibility studies, safety cases, acceptance activities and continuous improvement initiatives.

Applicants should hold a degree or equivalent qualification in mechanical, electrical, systems, railway or another relevant engineering discipline, together with substantial experience in rolling stock engineering or a closely related rail environment. A strong understanding of vehicle systems, including traction, braking, doors, control systems, body structures, HVAC or passenger information systems, is desirable. You should be familiar with relevant railway standards, assurance processes and safety-critical engineering practices, and be able to interpret complex technical information and make sound, evidence-based decisions. Strong communication, stakeholder management and leadership skills are essential, along with the ability to influence effectively in a matrix environment. Professional registration or progress towards it would be advantageous.

Responsibilities will include leading multidisciplinary teams and coordinating with engineering, operations, maintenance, safety, quality and supply-chain stakeholders. You will develop and maintain rolling stock strategies, technical specifications, asset management plans and performance reports; review designs and engineering changes; and support the resolution of technical issues, defects and reliability concerns. The role will also involve managing suppliers and contractors, monitoring delivery against programme, cost and quality targets, and ensuring that risks, non-conformances and configuration changes are appropriately controlled. You may be required to support depot, fleet and site activities, including inspections, investigations, testing, acceptance and readiness reviews.

Applicants should have substantial experience in rolling stock engineering, fleet management, rail vehicle maintenance or a closely related discipline, together with a strong understanding of railway systems, safety assurance, RAMS, configuration management and regulatory compliance. Experience across areas such as traction and braking, vehicle structures, doors, interiors, controls, passenger information or onboard systems would be advantageous. A relevant engineering qualification or equivalent professional experience is expected, along with the ability to interpret technical documentation, analyse performance data and make sound, evidence-based decisions. Strong communication, leadership and stakeholder-management skills are essential, as is the ability to manage competing priorities in a safety-critical environment. A proactive approach, attention to detail and commitment to continuous improvement will be highly valued.
