We are seeking an experienced Chief Estimator to lead the estimating function across a diverse portfolio of projects. This senior role will be responsible for developing accurate, competitive, and commercially sound cost estimates from early concept through to tender submission and contract award. You will provide strategic direction to the estimating team, establish robust pricing processes, and ensure that all submissions meet technical, commercial, and governance requirements.
Key responsibilities will include reviewing tender documentation, scopes, drawings, specifications, and contract conditions; coordinating quantity take-offs and cost plans; obtaining and evaluating supplier and subcontractor quotations; and identifying risks, exclusions, assumptions, and opportunities. You will prepare detailed estimates, tender returns, pricing summaries, and management reports, while working closely with project management, procurement, design, and commercial teams. The role will also involve mentoring estimators, reviewing work for accuracy and consistency, maintaining estimating databases and benchmarks, and contributing to continuous improvement of systems, procedures, and reporting. You will be expected to participate in tender strategy meetings, present recommendations to senior stakeholders, and support negotiations where required.
The successful candidate will have substantial experience in a senior estimating or pre-construction position, ideally within construction, infrastructure, engineering, or a related industry. A strong understanding of cost planning, build methodology, procurement routes, contracts, and risk management is essential. You will be confident interpreting complex technical information and using estimating, quantity surveying, and spreadsheet software to produce reliable outputs. Excellent commercial judgement, attention to detail, communication skills, and the ability to manage competing deadlines are required. Experience leading or developing an estimating team, engaging effectively with clients and supply chain partners, and working on large or complex tenders will be highly valued. Relevant professional qualifications or membership of an industry body would be advantageous.
