One of Scandinavia’s most technically challenging projects was underway in Gothenburg. The West Link was an 8km double track railway, 6km of which ran beneath the city. The cost of the project was estimated at 14.5 billion SEK, making it one of the largest in the region. The underground geological conditions varied greatly between sections; 2km of tunnels ran through clay, and the remaining 4km ran through rock. The rock excavation took place via drill and blast, and the clay was excavated via cut and cover.
