We are seeking an experienced Surface Water Quality Program Manager to lead the planning and implementation of projects that protect and improve the quality of rivers, lakes, wetlands and other surface water resources. This role will manage programs from concept through delivery, ensuring that projects are aligned with environmental objectives, regulatory requirements, approved budgets and agreed timelines. You will work across technical, operational, regulatory and community-facing teams to deliver practical, evidence-based outcomes.
Key responsibilities include developing program and project plans; coordinating water quality monitoring, investigations, assessments and improvement initiatives; managing consultants, contractors and technical specialists; and overseeing procurement, budgets, schedules, risks, quality assurance and reporting. You will interpret scientific and regulatory information, identify emerging risks and recommend appropriate mitigation measures. The role will also contribute to environmental approvals, compliance activities, incident response and the preparation of clear reports, briefing materials and presentations for internal and external stakeholders. Building strong relationships with regulators, local authorities, research partners, landholders, community representatives and other interested parties will be an important part of the position.
To succeed, you will have demonstrated experience managing environmental programs or complex projects, preferably with a focus on surface water quality, aquatic ecosystems, catchment management or environmental compliance. A relevant tertiary qualification in environmental science, water resources, engineering, natural resource management or a related discipline is desirable. You will bring strong knowledge of water quality principles, monitoring methodologies, environmental legislation and project governance, together with proven skills in contract management, risk assessment, budgeting and stakeholder engagement. Excellent written and verbal communication, sound judgement, collaborative leadership and the ability to manage competing priorities are essential. Experience using environmental data, geographic information systems or project management platforms will be advantageous.
