We are seeking a Signalling Principles Test Engineer to support the safe, reliable and compliant delivery of railway signalling systems. In this role, you will plan, prepare and conduct testing activities across new, modified and upgraded signalling assets, ensuring that designs and installations perform as intended and meet approved requirements. You will work closely with engineering, project delivery, operations and assurance teams to identify risks, resolve issues and support the successful entry into service of signalling equipment.
Your responsibilities will include reviewing signalling principles, functional specifications, test strategies, schematics and related technical documentation; developing test plans, test specifications, test records and test reports; and carrying out system, integration, site and commissioning tests. You will verify interlocking, route setting, train detection, points, signals, level crossings, control interfaces and associated safety functions. You will record results accurately, investigate failures, coordinate defect resolution and ensure that all test evidence is complete, traceable and compliant with relevant standards, procedures and assurance requirements. The role may involve site-based work, possessions, night shifts and travel to operational locations.
Applicants should have proven experience in railway signalling testing, commissioning, verification or a closely related engineering discipline, with a strong understanding of signalling principles and safety-critical systems. Knowledge of interlockings, control tables, railway operating rules, testing methodologies and configuration management would be highly beneficial. You should be analytical, methodical and confident working with technical documentation, test equipment and structured assurance processes. Effective communication and report-writing skills are essential, as is the ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams while maintaining a strong focus on safety and quality. A relevant engineering qualification or equivalent practical experience is expected, along with a willingness to obtain or maintain appropriate industry competencies and safety certifications.
