QA/QC Manager - Hydropower Rehabilitation & ModernisationRole Overview

Position: QA/QC Manager (Mechanical - Turbines & Generators)

Location: On-site / Project Office, Scotland

Term: Contract (Immediate start through to project completion)

Industry Sector: Renewable Energy - Heavy Hydropower

We are seeking an experienced QA/QC Manager for an immediate start to oversee the quality assurance and quality control frameworks for a major Hydropower Rehabilitation and Modernisation Project in Scotland. This critical role requires a technical expert with a deep understanding of heavy mechanical components-specifically large-scale hydro turbines and generators-alongside strong quality management leadership skills. The successful candidate will act as the principal bridge between the project owners and global Hydropower Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs).

Key Responsibilities1. Quality Management & Leadership

Establish, implement, and maintain the project-specific Quality Management Plan (QMP) in alignment with international standards (ISO 9001) and client requirements.

Lead and manage on-site quality control processes, audits, and surveillance programs.

Manage non-conformance reports (NCRs), driving root-cause analysis and ensuring effective corrective and preventive actions (CAPA) are completed.

Provide clear, concise quality performance reporting to senior project leadership and external stakeholders.

2. Technical Quality Control (Mechanical)

Oversee the quality, inspection, and test plans (ITPs) during the dismantling, refurbishment, installation, and commissioning of large mechanical turbines (e.g., Francis, Pelton, or Kaplan units) and generators.

Verify material certificates, welding/NDT (Non-Destructive Testing) records, dimensional alignments, and balancing reports for rotating machinery.

Ensure all modernisation and asset-life extension works meet stringent engineering and regulatory standards.

3. OEM & Vendor Surveillance

Serve as the primary quality interface with Tier-1 Hydropower OEMs and local tier-2 subcontractors.

Review vendor manufacturing databooks, factory acceptance testing (FAT) results, and site acceptance testing (SAT) procedures.

Ensure OEM components delivered to the site adhere strictly to technical specifications, minimizing installation and commissioning delays.

Required Profile & QualificationsExperience & Technical Background

Hydropower Expertise: Proven track record working on large-scale hydropower projects, with a strong preference for Rehabilitation, Modernisation, or Repowering initiatives.

Mechanical Specialism: Robust, demonstrable knowledge of heavy mechanical engineering, specifically hydro turbines, governors, valves, main shafts, and generator components.

OEM Exposure: Direct experience working either for or closely managing major global hydropower OEMs (e.g., Andritz, Voith, GE/Alstom).

Location Context: Based in or willing to relocate immediately to Scotland for the duration of the contract.

Skills & Certifications

Demonstrated Quality Management leadership skills with the ability to manage site inspectors and influence contractor behavior.

Experience developing and verifying detailed Inspection & Test Plans (ITPs).

Relevant qualifications in Quality Management (e.g., CQI/IRCA) or an Engineering discipline (BEng / HNC / HND in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience).

Strong familiarity with NDT methods, welding procedures (WPS/PQR), and heavy lifting quality protocols.

What the Project Offers

Immediate Start: A streamlined onboarding process to get you on-site right away.

High-Impact Work: Play a pivotal role in upgrading vital renewable energy infrastructure to secure Scotland's clean energy grid for the next generation.
