We are seeking an experienced Project Manager/Senior Highway Design Engineer to lead the delivery of complex highway and transportation infrastructure projects from initial concept through to construction. This role combines technical leadership, project management and client coordination, offering the opportunity to influence the design and delivery of schemes that improve safety, connectivity and network performance. You will manage project scope, programme, budget, risk and resources while ensuring that all outputs meet relevant technical standards, statutory requirements and client expectations.
Responsibilities will include leading multidisciplinary design teams, preparing and reviewing highway alignment, junction, pavement, drainage, traffic management and associated infrastructure designs, and overseeing the production of drawings, specifications, calculations and technical reports. You will coordinate with clients, contractors, local authorities, utility providers and other stakeholders, contribute to feasibility studies and optioneering, and provide technical advice throughout the project lifecycle. The role will also involve managing design reviews, supporting planning and approvals, monitoring progress, resolving technical issues and identifying opportunities to improve efficiency, quality and value. You may also support bids, fee proposals, business development and the mentoring of less experienced engineers.
Applicants should hold a degree or equivalent qualification in civil engineering, highway engineering or a related discipline, with substantial experience delivering highway design and infrastructure projects. Professional registration or demonstrable progress toward chartered status is desirable. You will need strong knowledge of relevant design standards, guidance and approval processes, together with experience using industry software such as Civil 3D, AutoCAD, MX, MicroDrainage or similar platforms. Excellent communication, organisation and leadership skills are essential, along with the ability to manage competing priorities, engage confidently with stakeholders and make sound technical and commercial decisions. A proactive, collaborative approach and a commitment to health, safety, quality and sustainable design are also required.
