We are seeking an accomplished Portfolio Director Rail & Transit to lead the strategic development and delivery of a complex portfolio of rail and public transport programmes. This senior role will be responsible for shaping portfolio direction, strengthening client relationships and ensuring that projects are delivered safely, efficiently and to the highest professional standards. The successful candidate will provide clear leadership across multidisciplinary teams, balancing commercial performance, operational priorities, technical excellence and long-term business objectives.
Key responsibilities will include establishing portfolio strategies, governance frameworks and delivery standards; overseeing major programmes from pursuit and mobilisation through to completion; and ensuring that scope, schedule, budget, quality, risk and resources are effectively managed. You will identify growth opportunities, contribute to bids and strategic proposals, and develop trusted relationships with clients, partners, regulators and other stakeholders. The role will also involve monitoring performance, resolving complex delivery issues, promoting innovation and digital transformation, and ensuring compliance with relevant safety, environmental and industry requirements. You will mentor senior managers and project leaders, support capability development, and foster a collaborative culture focused on continuous improvement.
Applicants should bring significant leadership experience within rail, transit, infrastructure or a closely related major capital delivery environment, together with a strong understanding of the full project and programme lifecycle. A proven record of managing large, diverse portfolios and high-value multidisciplinary teams is essential, as is experience in commercial management, risk mitigation, governance and stakeholder engagement. You will be an assured communicator with strong influencing, negotiation and decision-making skills, able to operate effectively at executive level while maintaining focus on practical delivery. A relevant degree or professional qualification in engineering, project management, transport, business or a related discipline is preferred. Experience with rail systems, stations, networks, rolling stock, transit operations or transport planning would be highly advantageous.
