We are seeking an On-Call Staff Archaeologist / Field Technician to support cultural resources investigations throughout Northern California. This is a flexible, field-based opportunity suited to an archaeology professional who can respond to short-term assignments, often involving construction monitoring, survey, testing, and documentation. Work may take place in remote locations, active construction areas, public lands, or other challenging field environments, with schedules varying according to project needs.

Responsibilities may include conducting pedestrian surveys; monitoring ground-disturbing activities; identifying, documenting, and evaluating archaeological materials and features; completing shovel test probes and other subsurface investigations; recording observations using approved field forms, maps, photographs, GPS equipment, and digital applications; assisting with site boundaries and condition assessments; and collecting, packaging, and maintaining the chain of custody for cultural materials. The successful candidate may also contribute to technical reports, daily field summaries, site records, data entry, artifact processing, and coordination with project archaeologists, tribal representatives, contractors, and agency personnel. Strict adherence to health and safety procedures, applicable laws and regulations, and project-specific protocols is required.

Applicants should have a bachelor’s degree in archaeology, anthropology, or a closely related discipline, along with field experience in cultural resource management or archaeological survey. Familiarity with standard archaeological methods, California regulatory requirements, and the Secretary of the Interior’s Professional Qualification Standards is preferred. Experience with GPS/GIS technology, digital data collection, artifact identification, and construction monitoring is advantageous. Candidates must demonstrate sound judgment, careful attention to detail, strong written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to work independently or as part of a team. A valid driver’s licence, reliable transportation, willingness to travel, and the ability to work outdoors in varying weather and terrain are required. Availability for on-call assignments and occasional early starts, overnight travel, or extended field days is expected.
