We are seeking an experienced Municipal Water Treatment Project Manager/Chief Operator to oversee the safe, reliable, and compliant operation of a municipal water treatment facility while managing capital improvement and maintenance projects. This role combines hands-on operational leadership with project coordination, regulatory compliance, budgeting, and team supervision. The successful candidate will help ensure the consistent delivery of high-quality drinking water and the efficient performance of treatment systems, equipment, and infrastructure.

Responsibilities will include supervising daily plant operations, monitoring treatment processes, reviewing laboratory and operational data, and ensuring compliance with applicable drinking water regulations, permits, health and safety requirements, and environmental standards. You will lead and support preventive maintenance programmes, troubleshoot mechanical and process issues, coordinate contractors and consultants, and oversee projects from planning and procurement through construction, commissioning, and closeout. The role will also involve preparing budgets, schedules, technical reports, operating procedures, and compliance documentation. You will train, coach, and schedule operations staff, maintain accurate records, respond to alarms and emergencies, and participate in an on-call or emergency response rota as required.

Applicants should hold a relevant qualification in water treatment, environmental science, engineering, chemistry, or a related discipline, together with a current water treatment operator certification appropriate to the facility’s classification. Demonstrable experience operating and maintaining municipal or industrial water treatment systems is essential, along with experience managing projects, contractors, budgets, and regulatory inspections. Knowledge of treatment processes, chemical handling, process control systems, asset management, and workplace safety requirements is expected. Strong leadership, communication, organisational, and problem-solving skills are required, as is the ability to interpret technical information and make sound decisions under pressure. A valid driving licence and flexibility to work outside normal hours during operational incidents or critical project activities may also be required.
