We are seeking a capable Mid/Senior-level Archaeologist to join a professional heritage and environmental team delivering archaeological work across a varied programme of projects. The successful candidate will contribute to the planning, coordination and delivery of archaeological investigations associated with development, infrastructure and conservation schemes. This role will suit an archaeologist with strong field experience who is ready to take on increased responsibility, or an established professional confident in managing projects, teams and client relationships.
Responsibilities will include preparing and reviewing archaeological documentation, including written schemes of investigation, risk assessments, project designs and technical reports. You will lead or support fieldwork such as evaluations, excavations, watching briefs and building recording, ensuring that work is completed safely, efficiently and in accordance with relevant standards, consent conditions and methodological requirements. You may supervise field teams, coordinate subcontractors, monitor quality, maintain accurate records and ensure that finds, samples, photographs and digital data are appropriately managed. The role will also involve interpreting results, contributing to post-excavation assessments, preparing publication material and presenting findings to clients, consultees and other stakeholders.
Applicants should hold a relevant degree or equivalent qualification in archaeology and have demonstrable professional experience in commercial or research-led archaeological practice. A strong understanding of archaeological methods, legislation, planning processes and professional guidance is essential. You should be able to produce clear, accurate written work and communicate effectively with colleagues, clients, contractors and regulatory bodies. Experience of project management, budget and programme monitoring, specialist coordination, GIS, archaeological recording systems or digital survey equipment would be advantageous. A full driving licence and willingness to travel to project sites, occasionally with overnight stays, may be required. We are looking for someone who is organised, adaptable and committed to high standards of professional practice, with the initiative to work independently and the collaborative approach needed to support colleagues and develop junior staff.
