We are seeking an experienced Tunnel Engineer to support the delivery of complex underground infrastructure projects from concept through to construction and completion. This role will involve applying sound engineering principles to the planning, design, construction, inspection and maintenance of tunnels, shafts, caverns and associated underground structures. You will work closely with multidisciplinary teams, contractors, designers and stakeholders to ensure that projects are delivered safely, efficiently, sustainably and in accordance with approved specifications.

Your responsibilities will include preparing and reviewing technical documentation, design calculations, drawings, specifications, risk assessments and construction methodologies. You will provide engineering advice on tunnelling methods, ground conditions, temporary works, excavation support, lining systems, waterproofing, ventilation and underground construction interfaces. The role will also involve monitoring site activities, reviewing contractor submissions, investigating technical issues, supporting progress and quality inspections, and contributing to the resolution of design or construction challenges. You may be required to assist with surveys, site investigations, audits, technical reports and project planning, while ensuring compliance with relevant legislation, standards and health and safety requirements.

Applicants should hold a degree or equivalent qualification in civil, structural, mining or geotechnical engineering, with demonstrable experience in tunnelling or major underground construction. Knowledge of tunnelling techniques, ground behaviour, tunnel support systems, construction sequencing and risk management is essential. Experience with design and project management software, technical reviews and construction quality assurance would be advantageous. Professional registration or progress towards professional accreditation is desirable. You should be analytical, practical and confident communicating with both technical and non-technical stakeholders. The ability to manage competing priorities, work collaboratively and make well-informed decisions in a demanding project environment is essential. We are seeking a Senior Tunnel Construction Engineer to lead the technical delivery of major tunnelling and underground infrastructure works. This role will be responsible for providing engineering direction throughout the construction lifecycle, from planning and mobilisation through to completion, commissioning and handover. You will work closely with project managers, construction teams, designers, subcontractors and other stakeholders to ensure that works are delivered safely, efficiently, on programme and to the required quality standards.

Key responsibilities will include developing and reviewing construction methodologies, temporary works proposals, risk assessments, inspection and test plans, and detailed work packages. You will oversee tunnelling activities and associated civil works, monitor progress against programme and budget, and provide practical solutions to technical challenges encountered on site. The role will also involve coordinating site investigations, reviewing design information, managing technical queries and non-conformances, and ensuring compliance with relevant specifications, standards, permits and regulatory requirements. You will support procurement and subcontractor management, contribute to progress reporting, and maintain accurate engineering and construction records.

Applicants should hold a degree or equivalent qualification in civil engineering, tunnelling, construction engineering or a related discipline, together with substantial experience delivering complex tunnel or underground construction projects. A strong understanding of tunnelling methods, ground conditions, temporary works, excavation support systems, underground structures and construction safety is essential. Experience with methods such as tunnel boring machines, sprayed concrete lining, cut-and-cover, shaft construction or drill-and-blast would be advantageous. You should be confident interpreting technical drawings and specifications, using construction management systems, and leading multidisciplinary teams in demanding site environments. Strong communication, problem-solving and stakeholder-management skills are required, along with a proactive approach to safety, quality and continuous improvement. The position may require regular site-based work, shift patterns and travel between project locations.
