Location: West Africa
Department: Health, Safety, Social & Environment (HSSE)
Reports to: HSE Manager

Role Summary

This is a high-impact opportunity for a proactive HSSE professional to support the delivery of bioenergy and construction projects across West Africa. The role is focused on embedding Environmental, Social, Health & Safety Management Systems (ESMS) within complex construction environments - ensuring full compliance with national regulations, contractor requirements, and international frameworks such as the IFC Performance Standards.

The successful candidate will initially oversee HSSE operations on a flagship bioenergy construction project in Ghana, before expanding support across multiple active sites as the regional portfolio grows.

Key Responsibilities

Implement and enforce project-specific HSSE plans across bioenergy and construction sites in line with legal and corporate standards.

Conduct construction-focused risk assessments, Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), and manage permit-to-work systems for high-risk activities.

Coordinate closely with EPC and construction contractors to maintain safe site execution and structured onboarding processes.

Lead incident investigations, root cause analysis, and corrective action tracking within active construction environments.

Deliver HSSE inductions, toolbox talks, and emergency preparedness drills tailored to construction and bioenergy operations.

Monitor environmental compliance during construction activities, including air quality, dust, noise, waste management, and EIA/ESIA implementation.

Promote labour welfare, worker rights, and safe site practices across contractor workforces.

Interface with clients, regulators, contractors, and host communities on HSSE matters.

Prepare HSSE performance reports and support audits related to construction and project delivery.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Occupational Health & Safety, Engineering, Construction Management, or related discipline.

Professional HSSE certification (e.g., NEBOSH, IOSH) required.

Minimum 5 years' HSSE experience, ideally within bioenergy, infrastructure, industrial construction, or EPC project environments.

Skills & Experience

Strong knowledge of national HSE legislation and experience engaging regulatory bodies within construction settings.

Familiarity with IFC Performance Standards and investor compliance frameworks.

Working knowledge of ISO 45001 / ISO 18001 standards.

Proven experience in Hazard Identification & Risk Assessment (HIRA) within live construction sites.

Comfortable working in remote project environments and managing multi-site oversight.

Strong stakeholder engagement, contractor coordination, and reporting capabilities.

Willingness to travel extensively across West Africa.

Why This Role?

This role places you at the intersection of bioenergy development and large-scale construction, contributing directly to infrastructure that supports West Africa's energy transition. You will play a critical role in ensuring safe, compliant, and socially responsible project execution while gaining exposure to complex construction delivery and international HSSE standards. It is an opportunity to grow within a fast-scaling portfolio that combines engineering, sustainability, and real-world impact.
