We are seeking an experienced Water/Sewer Superintendent to oversee the safe, efficient, and reliable operation, maintenance, and improvement of water distribution and wastewater collection systems. This position provides day-to-day leadership for field crews, coordinates maintenance and repair activities, and ensures services are delivered in accordance with applicable regulations, safety standards, and operational procedures. The successful candidate will be a practical, organised leader who can respond effectively to emergencies while maintaining a strong focus on service quality and public safety.
Key responsibilities include planning and assigning daily work; supervising, training, and evaluating staff; inspecting water and sewer infrastructure; coordinating installation, repair, and replacement projects; and monitoring system performance. The Superintendent will investigate service issues, water leaks, sewer blockages, and other operational concerns, directing corrective action as required. Duties will also include maintaining accurate work records, reviewing utility plans and specifications, managing materials and equipment, supporting budget preparation, obtaining estimates, and coordinating with contractors, engineers, regulatory agencies, and the public. The role may require participation in an emergency or after-hours call-out schedule and regular fieldwork in varying weather and site conditions.
Applicants should have demonstrated experience in water and wastewater utility operations, including progressively responsible supervisory experience. A relevant technical qualification, trade certification, or equivalent combination of education and practical experience is preferred. Candidates must possess strong knowledge of water distribution, sewer collection systems, pumps, valves, treatment processes, utility construction, and applicable health, environmental, and occupational safety requirements. The ability to read plans, use relevant computerised work-order or asset-management systems, prepare clear reports, and manage multiple priorities is essential. A valid driver’s licence and the ability to obtain or maintain any required operator certifications are also required. Strong communication, sound judgement, problem-solving skills, and a commitment to teamwork are essential for success in this role.
