We are seeking an experienced Earthwork Superintendent to oversee daily field operations on civil construction and site development projects. The successful candidate will provide hands-on leadership to earthwork crews, coordinate equipment and resources, and ensure work is completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with approved plans, specifications, schedules, and quality standards. This role requires a strong understanding of grading, excavation, site preparation, drainage, utilities, soil placement, compaction, and heavy civil construction practices.
Key responsibilities include planning and directing daily activities, assigning work to operators and laborers, coordinating subcontractors, and communicating progress with project management, survey teams, inspectors, and other trades. You will review drawings and specifications, identify potential issues, monitor production, verify grades and elevations, and help maintain project schedules. The Superintendent will also promote a strong safety culture by conducting pre-task meetings, enforcing site rules, inspecting work areas and equipment, and addressing hazards promptly. Accurate documentation of manpower, materials, equipment usage, productivity, and site conditions will be expected.
Applicants should have several years of progressive experience supervising earthwork or heavy civil construction, with proven knowledge of excavation, mass grading, fine grading, trenching, soil stabilization, and compaction testing. The ability to read and interpret plans, use basic construction technology and surveying information, and make sound decisions in changing field conditions is essential. Strong communication, organization, leadership, and problem-solving skills are required, along with the ability to manage multiple priorities and work collaboratively with diverse teams. A valid driver’s licence and relevant safety training are preferred; certifications related to construction supervision, equipment operation, or first aid will be considered an asset. This position may require extended hours, outdoor work, and travel between project locations.
