We are seeking an experienced Road Superintendent to lead the safe, efficient and high-quality delivery of road maintenance, construction and improvement activities. The successful candidate will oversee day-to-day operations across multiple work sites, ensuring that projects are completed on schedule, within budget and in accordance with approved plans, specifications and relevant legislation. This is a hands-on leadership role requiring strong knowledge of road construction methods, maintenance practices, plant operations and site safety.
Key responsibilities will include planning labour, materials, equipment and subcontractor requirements; allocating work to site teams; monitoring progress and productivity; and resolving operational issues as they arise. You will inspect works to ensure compliance with quality standards, identify defects and arrange appropriate corrective action. The role will also involve maintaining accurate records, preparing progress reports, monitoring costs and supporting the development of work programmes and project estimates. You will liaise with clients, engineers, local authorities, utility providers and members of the public, responding professionally to queries and minimising disruption to road users and surrounding communities.
You will provide clear direction and support to supervisors, operatives and contractors, promoting a positive culture of teamwork, accountability and continuous improvement. Ensuring that risk assessments, method statements, traffic management arrangements and environmental controls are implemented will be a core part of the position. Applicants should have substantial experience in road construction or highways maintenance, including previous supervisory or management responsibility. A sound understanding of health and safety requirements, temporary traffic management, construction documentation and quality assurance is essential. Strong communication, organisational and problem-solving skills are required, together with the ability to prioritise competing demands and make effective decisions in a busy operational environment. Relevant technical qualifications, a recognised site safety qualification and a full driving licence would be advantageous.
