We are seeking a motivated Highway Design Student to join a collaborative team supporting the development of transport and infrastructure projects. This placement offers the opportunity to gain practical experience in highway engineering, from initial feasibility and concept development through to detailed design and construction support. You will work alongside experienced engineers and technicians, contributing to projects that improve connectivity, safety and accessibility for communities.

Your responsibilities will include assisting with the preparation of highway and infrastructure designs, drawings, technical reports and design calculations. You may help develop arrangements for roads, junctions, pedestrian and cycle facilities, drainage interfaces, earthworks and associated infrastructure, while ensuring that designs meet relevant standards and client requirements. You will also support the review of drawings and technical information, attend project meetings, undertake site visits where appropriate, and help coordinate information with other disciplines and project stakeholders. The role may involve using computer-aided design and engineering software, maintaining accurate project records and contributing to the resolution of design issues.

Applicants should be studying towards a degree or equivalent qualification in civil engineering, transport engineering or a related subject, with an interest in highway design and sustainable transport. A basic understanding of highway standards, design principles and engineering drawings would be beneficial, although full training and mentoring will be provided. Familiarity with AutoCAD, Civil 3D, MicroStation or similar design software is desirable. You should be able to demonstrate sound numerical and analytical skills, attention to detail and a willingness to learn. Strong written and verbal communication skills are important, as is the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team. A proactive approach, good organisation and a commitment to delivering high-quality work will help you succeed in this role.
